Limewashing Internal Brick : A Modern Coastal Refresh

There’s something special about exposed brick; the texture, warmth, and character it brings to a space. But when brick feels too heavy, dark, or dated, limewash offers the perfect balance between transformation and preservation.

For this project, we refreshed internal brickwork using a limewash finish, creating a softer, lighter aesthetic while still allowing the natural texture of the brick to shine through. The result is a modern coastal look that feels calm, breathable, and effortlessly timeless.

What Is Limewash?

Limewash is a natural, mineral-based coating that penetrates porous surfaces like brick rather than sitting on top of them like traditional paint. Instead of forming a solid film, it absorbs into the brick, creating a finish that looks soft, chalky, and beautifully organic.

Because of this, no two limewashed walls ever look the same; subtle tonal variations and movement are part of its charm.

Why Limewash Works So Well on Internal Brick

One of the biggest advantages of limewash is how it transforms the feel of a space without erasing its character. In this home, the original brick felt visually heavy. By limewashing it, we were able to:

  • Brighten the room without losing texture

  • Soften the overall look while keeping depth and interest

  • Create a relaxed, coastal-inspired atmosphere

  • Make the space feel more open, modern, and cohesive

The finish still allows hints of the original brick colour to show through, giving the wall a lived-in, natural look rather than a flat, painted appearance.

Before and After

A Perfect Fit for Modern Coastal Interiors

Limewash is especially popular in modern coastal and Mediterranean-inspired homes. Its soft, matte finish pairs beautifully with natural light, timber flooring, neutral palettes, and simple architectural details.

As light shifts throughout the day, the limewashed brick subtly changes in tone, adding warmth and movement to the space — something traditional paint simply can’t replicate.

More Than Just a Visual Upgrade

Beyond aesthetics, limewash is breathable and suited to interior brick surfaces where moisture movement is important. It’s a practical choice as well as a beautiful one, especially for older homes or feature brick walls.

Thinking About Limewash for Your Home?

If you love the idea of refreshing brick without covering it completely, limewash is a stunning option. It’s ideal for feature walls, fireplaces, arches, and statement brickwork where you want character with a softer edge.

We love working with finishes that enhance a home’s existing features rather than hiding them. Limewash is a perfect example of that philosophy.
